Located in Iranian Azerbaijan, in the northwest of Iran, the city of Tabriz dates back to 791 AD. It gained importance from the 10th century onwards due to its climate and strategic position. In 1502, Ishmael I, founder of the Safavid dynasty (1502-1736), made Tabriz his capital.
The art of carpet making in Tabriz dates back to ancient times and developed over the centuries. The most beautiful academic and major achievements date back to the reign of Shah Abbas (1588-1629) and were made in the cities of Kashan, Kerman, Meshed, Isfahan and Tabriz. From the end of the 19th century until the 1930s, European companies settled in Tabriz attracted by the mastery and reputation of the weavers of Tabriz.
