Doge’s Palace towards Riva degli Schiavoni
Watercolour on canvas, cm 68 x 51
With frame, cm 88 x 62
Signed in the bottom left and right Zi(?)li
The painting depicts the Doge’s Palace towards the Prison Palace with the nineteenth-century Bridge of Straw and the narthex of the Basilica of San Marco with the column of the same name. The horizontal opening underlined by Riva degli Schiavoni, in one, corresponds to the vertical momentum of the column in marble troadense with the bronze protector of the city, in the other.
The delicate drawing with which the artist has placed the color spots gives a romantic and dreamy vision, preserved by time, of the Venetian architecture.
The practice of portraying Venetian views, begun in modern times on the territory, spread throughout the European context thanks to the practice of Grand Tour. The subtlety of the landscape in miniaturising the smallest detail, for the sake of authenticity and antique taste, is also present in this pair of watercolors, in which the artist has not spared to return even the intricate goticismi of Palazzo Ducale, along with the careful rhythmic succession of arches and capitals. The unmistakable beauty of Venice is naturally reflected in the painter’s technical expertise, masterfully using the technique of watercolor.
