"Like The Three Wise Men In Galilee 17th Century"
17th century woodcuts, printed on silk probably at the beginning of the 19th century to give a boost of conviction to the faithful... It was necessary to place pious images in one's mass booklet. What could be more delicate than these pieces of fabric printed with several plates then cut out like today's comic strips. Inserted in our missals, they made us dream. Would they keep their promises? The prints on pink silk are in glory of the Three Wise Men. Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar; who found the newborn thanks to the star.... The legend, first in Latin, says: "These notes touched the heads of the Holy Kings in Cologne. They are for travelers against the misfortunes of the roads, headaches, fevers, witchcraft, all kinds of evil spells and sudden death." Playing on the piety and credulity of pilgrims, these images were sold as they left the cathedral… and like indulgences, they promised you many protections. There are four different ones, a triplicate and a single.
