"Daisy Makeig-jones, Fairyland Phoenix Octagonal Bowl, Circa 1920"
A charming bone china bowl by Daisy Makeig-Jones, Wedgwood, England. This octagonal bowl in orange Fairyland lustre is decorated with a gilt Phoenix bird, a Portland vase on the base and the pattern number Z4825. The chequered rim and base are decorated with an inner medallion, a ruyi, a cloud and silver-gilt auspicious objects. Susannah Margaretta 'Daisy' Makeig-Jones was a pottery designer for Wedgwood. She is best known for her 'Fairyland Lustre' series. She was born in Wath-upon-Dearne near Rotherham in Yorkshire, the eldest of seven children, and came from a professional background. After attending boarding school and studying at Torquay School of Art, she joined Wedgwood in 1909. By 1914 Daisy had become a designer in her own right, with her own studio. Having become familiar with the various decorative techniques used in ceramic production, she set out to create an entirely new and exciting style by combining the three techniques of underglaze marbling, overglaze graining and iridescence with fanciful designs highlighted by gilding. Daisy convinced her studio neighbour James Hodgkiss and his decorating team to help her develop her idea, and the first pattern in the First Ten Lustre series was launched in October 1914. The first ten lustre ranges, numbered Z4823 to Z4832, consisted of ten different patterns with different lustre colour combinations. The first lustres appeared on the market only nine months after Daisy became a designer, a testament to her artistic vision and talent, as well as her tenacity and perseverance. Our #3 Lustre Bowl with pattern Z4825, which concludes the first 10 Lustre ranges. In this range Daisy used the 'Phoenix' pattern, an orange lustre on the outside and a luxurious blue marbled glaze that goes from blue to purple on the inside. Orange is Daisy's favourite lustre colour. She wanted to add her own personal touch to the lustres. This range was designed by Daisy Makeig Jones and was produced from 1914 to 1929. Limited editions and the ever-increasing interest in Daisy Makeig-Jones' work have driven prices up year on year. Many collectors consider buying Daisy Makeig-Jones designs to be a good investment. Please note the price of an identical cup at Sotheby's auction: https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/interiors/dining-room/_celestial-phoenix-octagonal-bowl-84de
Bowl dimensions: 13 cm diameter, 7.5 cm height: Diameter 13 cm, height 7.2 cm
Condition: Minimal wear to the gilding due to age. Otherwise, the bowl is in excellent antique condition. Some of the ribbing on the bowl appears worn in the photograph. In reality, this is a reflection effect. The surfaces of the bowl are very shiny, and the actual appearance of the bowl is much better than in the photo.
