Japan, early 20th century, very pretty polychrome and gilded wooden mask from the Noh theater representing the character of Susano-no-Mikoto, a major deity in Japanese Shinto mythology. He is the impetuous god of the sea and storms, symbolizing both destruction and renewal, chaos and fertility, death and rebirth. In Noh and Kabuki, Susano is a recurring character, playing the role of the hero who defies the forces of evil. In modern Japanese popular culture Susano continues to be an important figure, and appears in many manga, video games and films. Good condition except for slight normal and inconsequential wear.
Height 22 cm. Width 18 cm. The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a well-known brand.
