"Antique Chinese Flamed Glaze Vase, Circa 19th Century"
This rare 19th-century Chinese earthenware vase, decorated with a striking copper-red flambé glaze, is a remarkable example of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship. Featuring elegant curved elephant-head handles with rings, this baluster-shaped vase exudes a sense of sophistication and cultural heritage. The oxblood-red glaze, commonly called sang-de-boeuf because of its resemblance to the color of oxblood, enhances the vase's appearance with its rich, lustrous finish. The vase's flambé glaze, a term originating in Europe for its resemblance to flames, reflects the extraordinary skills of Chinese potters who perfected this unique technique over the centuries. The use of copper oxide in a reducing atmosphere, a method first experimented with during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), creates the vase’s deep, vibrant hues and distinctive texture, captivating collectors with its tactile and visual appeal. These pieces, celebrated for their simplicity and intensity, remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Chinese flame-glazed ceramics have a rich history dating back over 500 years. The use of copper oxide to achieve the flamed effect became particularly popular during the Song Dynasty, and artisans continued to develop and refine the technique during subsequent dynasties. When these exceptional ceramics reached Europe, they were immediately coveted by collectors for their unique color and texture. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Chinese potters had perfected the flambé technique, producing pieces that combined traditional forms with innovative glazing methods, resulting in unique works of art that are highly prized today.
