"Marriage, 15th/16th Century, School Of Baldassare Estense (1443-1504)"
The Marriage, 15th/16th century School of BALDASSARE ESTENSE (1443-1504) A large 15th century Ferrara School portrait of a husband and wife praying outside a small hillside town, oil/tempera on panel. The couple stand before a devotional statue (cut out of the composition) where they have stopped to pray. There is a strange contrast between the husband who is content and pious and his wife who is despairing and in deep thought. This perhaps symbolises an unhappy marriage. The panel and painted surface are in exceptional condition for their age. Slight bowing to the panel but no notable cracks and the painted surface very stable. Presented in an ebonised frame. Provenance: Private collector, Montrose, UK Dimensions: 25" x 21" framed approximately
