"Buddha Maravijaya, Mandalay."
Very fine example of the Buddha Shakyamuni in carved, lacquered and gilded wood. The folds and contours of his monastic robe are enhanced with glass beads. The Awakened One is seated in bhumisparsa-mudra or “taking the earth to witness” on a double lotus base which is still equipped with its reliquary cavity. The expression of the gaze (made with cowries) is particularly intense and realistic, almost disturbing. The dark lacquer which dominates the front of the work contrasts with the gilding still preserved at the back, accentuating the presence of this magnificent piece. Burma, early Mandalay period (1853-1948). H 52 CM XL 37 CM XP 27 CM Provenance: Estate of the collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau. Sold with certificate of provenance.
