Biography:
Lucien Fontanarosa was born in December 1912 in Paris. His youth was spent between Paris and Italy.
At the Ecole Estienne, he met Jacques Ratier who became his friend and then his dealer. In 1933 and 1934, he exhibited at the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts, obtained a travel grant and went to paint in Spain and Morocco.
In 1937, he entered the Villa Medici in Rome with Annette Faive, also a painter (who would become his wife), for 4 years and also developed a passion for music.
He exhibited in England, the United States, Japan, France and spent his summers in Provence. He entered the Institute in 1955.
The Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice organized a vast retrospective of his paintings in 1973. His audience was international. In addition to his personal exhibitions, he participated in numerous group exhibitions. He was awarded the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1936 (aged 24), the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris and the Vermeille Medal, the Grand Prix des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps.
His paintings were acquired by the State, the MAM and by French cities such as Cambrai and Chartres and foreign cities such as Sofia and Nottingham.
