Hindu ritual box, representing a bull (metal or bronze) surrounded by four rats. Indonesia, 19th century, perhaps Bali. This box is dedicated to Shiva and Ganesh, the bull (Nandi) is the vehicle of the first while the rats are that of the second. The rats wear two colors: Yellow symbolizes knowledge and learning (mental development, meditation) as well as happiness, peace, stability. It is also the color of Ganesh. In Hinduism, the color red represents honor, love and prosperity.
