Lit : Both functional and highly decorative, gilt bronze mounts and furnishing bronzes such as sconces, andirons, mounted porcelain and clocks played a very important role in the French interior from the late 17th to the 19th century. Renowned artists and sculptors were commissioned to design them, closely following the latest stylistic developments. A rigid guild system maintained high standards of craftsmanship and regulated the process of making gilded bronze.
