Object description :

"Molosser Collar - Immoral Judicial Expert, Notary Of Mayenne - Dog Collar"
First half of the 19th century France This metal and leather dog collar is a remarkable example of 19th century French craftsmanship, dating from the first half of the century. Designed to protect the imposing guard dogs, Molossers, during combat or against attacks, this collar is distinguished by its imposing appearance and its metal elements, which give it both a defensive function and an ornamental character. The collar bears the inscription: Dutertre, Expert La Roë, Mayenne. In the 19th century, a notary could also be considered an “expert”, particularly in the context of his legal functions related to real estate transactions, inheritances, and contracts. Although his official title was “notary”, his competence and authority in areas such as wealth management or property valuation justified the use of the term “expert” in the common language of the time. As legal professionals, notaries possessed particular expertise that could be called upon by the courts to shed light on technical or legal aspects of a case. This is how a notary could be appointed as a legal expert in the 19th century. Pierre Dutertre, a notary in Mayenne from the year VIII, had a career marked by administrative responsibilities and controversies. Initially appointed notary in Savigny in Mayenne in 1787, he was then appointed administrator of the district, before being dismissed for incivility and immorality. Despite these accusations, Dutertre continued his notarial career and was appointed notary public in Ambrières in the year VI. Condition: The collar shows signs of natural wear, testifying to its age and use. It is in good general condition, although the leash attachment is missing. Source: Departmental Archives of Mayenne.
