Object description :

"Russian Orthodox Icon - Saint Matthew, Evangelist - Icon - Tempera On Wood"
Second half of the 19th century Russia - Moscow or Novgorodian School Superb Russian Orthodox icon representing Saint Matthew, one of the four evangelists, identifiable by the Cyrillic inscription "Матфей" (Matthew) and "св. еванг." (holy evangelist). He is represented according to the iconographic tradition, holding an open book, symbolizing his role as author of the Gospel according to Matthew. The icon adopts an octagonal format, relatively rare in traditional Orthodox icons, indicating a regional production or a specific workshop. The pose of Saint Matthew in three-quarters brings a more naturalistic dynamic than the frontal representations typical of classical Byzantine art. The chromatic palette is composed of sober tones, dominated by shades of brown, red and black. The red of the tunic symbolizes spiritual royalty and sacrifice, common attributes for the evangelists. The dark hues in the background evoke the Muscovite or Novgorodian styles, known for their simplicity and solemnity. The face of Saint Matthew is rendered with a subtle naturalism, particularly visible in the delicate shading around the eyes, eyebrows, and beard. This treatment reflects the Western influence introduced into Russian icon art after the reforms of Peter the Great, which brought elements of realism. The naturalistic treatment of the face and posture, as well as the modest use of color, reflect a transitional period in Orthodox icon art, when local traditions incorporated aspects of Western realism while preserving classical symbolic structures. The finely drawn halo symbolizes holiness and divine light. The absence of complex decoration or gilding reflects a more modest style, linked to local or regional production. This icon comes from a post-medieval Russian school of the 19th century. The realism in the treatment of facial features and the sober chromatic palette are characteristic of the Moscow and Novgorod schools from the 18th century, a time when Russian workshops integrated certain Western stylistic elements while respecting Orthodox traditions. As in many icons of the evangelists, the open book symbolizes the Gospel of Matthew, a fundamental text of the New Testament. The fact that it is open underlines the importance of the continuous transmission of the divine word. Red is often associated with martyrdom and resurrection, while the dark tones of the background create a sacred atmosphere, inviting divine contemplation.
