Boats at low tide
Gouache on paper, monogram lower right, 19 x 30 cm. Softness and tranquility of a Normandy beach, once the tide has receded, leaving behind a few stranded fishing boats. Provenance: Former collection of Mr. Gilbert Dreyfus (1902-1989). Doctor, one of the precursors of endocrinology. A member of the Resistance during the war, he was a member of the Communist Party and a friend of Aragon, he participated in the creation of the local FTP. Arrested by the Germans in Bollène, then deported to Mauthausen, he was used as a doctor. He then worked, at the risk of his life, to save the lives of many deportees. After the war, he pursued a brilliant medical and scientific career (head of department at La Pitié, member of the Academy of Medicine and the Institute).
