Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl by Daisy Makeig-Jones – silver Fudogs & mythological interior, c. 1920s
This rare and striking antique porcelain bowl was designed by the renowned Wedgwood artist Daisy Makeig-Jones and dates to the 1920s. Part of the early "Shine" series, it reflects the bold experimentation and creative brilliance that would culminate in her celebrated Fairyland Lustre line.
The bowl’s exterior is covered in a rich caramel-orange mottled glaze, enhanced with silver lustre decoration depicting fantastical Fudog figures in motion. The interior features a pearlescent lustre finish with ethereal depictions of mythological characters, including Bai-fuku (the Hermit) and Waso-byo-e (Japanese Gulliver), flying on cranes and geese. These rare scenes are meticulously rendered and shimmer with the iridescence characteristic of Fairyland Lustre.
This specific design is referenced in Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre by Una des Fontaines (1975), p. 83, underlining its place within Makeig-Jones' canonical works. The underside bears the Wedgwood Portland Vase mark with three stars, authenticating it as a genuine early 20th-century piece.
Daisy Makeig-Jones joined Wedgwood as a designer in 1911, and by 1914 had begun creating the imaginative, technically advanced works for which she is now famous. Combining underglaze mottling, overglaze lustres, and fantastical narrative scenes, she pushed Wedgwood into a new realm of collectible decorative art.
Bowls such as this one are particularly valued for their combination of rarity, technical brilliance, and whimsical design—offering collectors a glimpse into the early phase of Fairyland Lustre experimentation before the full series was developed.
