"The Hermitage Of San Bartolomeo By Bourgeois Fidèle Constant "
Superb ink wash from the early 19th century, representing the hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Abruzzo, by Le Commandant Bourgeois (his full name is Florent Fidèle Constant Bourgeois) (1767-1841). A soldier, with the rank of colonel, he became a student of Jacques Louis David, and made a new fruitful career as a history and landscape painter. His travels in Italy were a constant source of inspiration, producing paintings and washes of the places visited. Engravings were taken from his work, and we know the engraving taken from this drawing (see photo). He exhibited at the Salon of 1791, and received orders from Vivant-Denon for Bonaparte's campaigns. He received accommodation at the Louvre, privileges of renowned artists since Louis XIV. The drawing is summarily presented in a small old gilded baguette on a gray background. It is in original condition .
