This lithograph entitled Dans les ronces by Henri Detouche was published in April 1898 in the twelfth issue of the monthly art magazine L'Estampe moderne. Accompanied by a text by the artist in serpente, this lithograph warns against the deceptive appearances of nature.
The artist informs us that as she prepares to relax in a stream, a young girl is surprised by a foreign presence and tries to hide in the thickets, but is prevented from doing so by brambles. This subject is reminiscent of the frequent topos of women surprised in the baths, whether in the Bible with the episode of Susanna and the elders or in mythology with Artemis and Actaeon. With this pathetic image, the artist calls into question Nature, described as charming and deceptive and "in continual ambush".
