Biography:
Demetre CHIPARUS 1886 / 1947

Demetre Chiparus, born Dumitru Haralamb Chipăruș on September 16, 1886 in Dorohoi, Romania and died on January 22, 1947 in Paris, is a sculptor of the art deco artistic period who lived and worked in Paris. He is sometimes called Demeter Chiparus.
Chiparus is known primarily for his bronze and ivory chryselephantine sculptures of exotic dancers. He produced his most notable works between 1914 and 1933. Demetre Chiparus is one of the most sought-after Art Deco sculptors on the market. Drawing inspiration from Egyptian art, this artist has brought chryselephantine sculpture back into fashion, creating elegant and refined dancers and female figures.

In 1909, Dumitrua left his hometown near the Ukrainian border to study painting and drawing in Florence, Italy, where he trained with master sculptor Raffaello Romanelli.
In 1912, he was in Paris. He was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts and rubbed shoulders with sculptors Antonin Mercié and Jean Boucher
In 1914, he received the "honorable" medal for the sculpture he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français. He opened his studio after the war and exhibited regularly in salons. He specialized in chryselephantine sculpture, a combination of ivory and bronze. With this distinction, he enjoyed a flourishing reputation on the Parisian art scene and obtained a partnership with the foundry Edmond Etling et Cie. His works enjoyed resounding commercial success. During the Roaring Twenties, his sculptures attracted French and international collectors, ensuring Chiparus a comfortable lifestyle.

In 1920, Chiparus closely followed the excavation work carried out in the tomb of Tutankhamun and drew his inspiration from the statues found. Fascinated by Egyptian chryselephantine sculpture, he modernized the ancestral association of gold and ivory to shape his own style, combining bronze with ivory. He dressed his characters in traditional clothing and borrowed Cleopatra's features to draw his female faces. Chiparus' technique is thus summarized in an article in the newspaper La Tribune: "the artistic reference is the prolific work of the Romanian Demeter Chiparus whose touch is particularly recognizable. After a few drawings, to give the founder a precise idea of the expected result, the artist made a "plastiline", a ductile material like clay that takes its final shape when hardened. The founder assembled the ivory work and the metal patina, then the whole thing was painted cold. Finally, a base, in marble or onyx, completed the statuette." This working technique appealed to many sculptors such as Peter Tereszczuk or Ferdinand Preiss, who made Chiparus one of the leaders of decorative sculpture.

Considered one of the most important sculptors of his generation, Chiparus enjoyed both museum and commercial recognition during his lifetime, multiplying exhibitions and private commissions. Since the 1970s, with the renewed interest of collectors in Art Deco, the sculptor has established himself as one of the most highly rated artists on the market, with a sales record set in 2007 in New York for Les Girls, a chryselephantine sculpture from 1928 sold for 690,580 euros.
He died in Paris on January 22, 1947. He is buried in the Bagneux cemetery in Paris.
The largest collection of Chiparus' works, consisting of 120 pieces, is now exhibited at the Art Deco Museum in Moscow.
An important permanent collection of Chiparus dancers is also exhibited at the Museum of Art Nouveau and Deco in Salamanca, Spain, called Casa Lis (Lis House), which was built by Miguel de Lis, an industrial tanner passionate about art nouveau. The collection of Chiparus dancers is part of the private collection of the antique dealer Manuel Ramos Andrade who donated it to the museum.
