Little was known about this artist and his work until very recently. Lemoyne would become a painter of flowers, fruits, and historical painting, entering the Academy on 1 August 1654. In 1657 he received a commission to paint a series of decorative pictures for the house of Chancellor Pierre Seguier. Lemoyne's works (about four signed paintings to date) all demonstrate a consistent mastery of realism in the painting of fruits and a keen sense of observation, showing voluptuous fruity textures throughout.
