"Netsuke - Noh Theater Mask, Karasu Tengu - Creature - Japan - Meiji Period"
Late 19th century Japan Meiji period (1868-1912) Superb carved wooden netsuke representing a Karasu Tengu, a mythological creature from Japanese tradition. The Karasu Tengu, or "raven Tengu", is a hybrid being that is half-man and half-raven, often depicted with a bird's beak or face. This type of figure is closely associated with Japanese legends, where it embodies a protective spirit or guardian of the mountain, sometimes benevolent, sometimes fiercely feared. This netsuke, although small in size, exudes a strong presence. The face of the Karasu Tengu is finely carved with expressive features, including its long nose reminiscent of a raven's beak, a symbol of its mythical origin. The carefully worked, patinated wood bears witness to the skill of the artisans of the Meiji period, when netsuke carving reached an exceptional level of refinement. In Japanese tradition, the Karasu Tengu is often seen as a protector, but also as a supernatural creature capable of teaching esoteric secrets or punishing the arrogant. This netsuke therefore embodies a powerful symbolism linked to protection, wisdom and spiritual forces. Note: Side Himotoshi. Dimensions: Height: 6.5 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY!
