Madonna and Child
Oil on canvas, cm 29 x 29
With frame, cm 45 x 45
Signed in the lower right "Gio. Cammarano"
It is not possible to assume with any certainty the membership of the present artist, "Gio." , probably Giovanni, to the notorious family of the Cammarano, of which Giuseppe (Sciacca, 1766 - Napoli, 1850) and Michele (Napoli, 1835 - ivi, 1920) were part.
The painting depicts the Virgin in a prayerful attitude, with her hands gently gathered to her chest. The intimate gesture of recollection, added to the young and rosy cheeks, gives the canvas a deep composure. The artist has considered every single aspect of the composition: from the wise use of color, perfectly nuanced and pastel tones loaded in correspondence with the robe of the Virgin, to the lenticular restitution of the crown of Mary, Veristicamente defined hair by hair.
The total focus on the prayer of the Madonna, bright on a dark background, is in full nineteenth-century academic ferment, even if the unusual grace of the present does not allow to place deterministically the artist in the current of the Nazarenes or Purists. The silent emotional participation, vibrant in the implicit formalism underlying the Virgin, makes the present painting transcendent to any cataloging.
