Art expert’s assessment
Oil on canvas, cm 97 x 77
With frame, cm 112 x 92
Signed "Morselli"
The canvas depicts a young couple of married people trying to get an art expert to evaluate a painting in their studio. The connoisseur is sitting in a comfortable armchair and holds the painting in his hands, whose subject is hidden from the viewer’s view, causing a flicker of mystery to light up in the subject, while the young people are busy explaining the subject of the painting. The room in which the work is set is completely decorated with paintings, with a as was typical in the ancient aristocratic houses where entire halls and long corridors served with their high ceilings to accommodate the most varied artistic productions. Examples of 19th century dwellings so embellished can still be seen today in the collection of Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella and Palazzo Colonna in Rome.
