"Charles Colson Saint John The Baptist Sketch "
Sketch for a representation of Saint John the Baptist. The painting is signed Ch Colson and dated 1856 lower right. It is framed in its original wooden and gilded stucco frame which has some accidents and losses. Without a frame, the canvas measures 36x28 cm. Charles Jean Baptiste Colson was born in 1810 in Strasbourg, he then followed the courses of Baron Gros at the School of Fine Arts in Paris from 1827. After a short stay in New Orleans in 1837, where he left some portraits, he returned to Paris until 1851 where he exhibited at the Salon. He then divided his life between Paris and Agen where he painted many portraits of the local bourgeoisie. He dies in 1888.
