JOB (1858-1931)

Jacques Onfroy de Bréville, known as Job, is a French cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator born on 25 November 1858 in Bar-le-Duc and died on 15 September 1931 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.

His artist name, «Job», is composed from the initial of his usual first name Jacques and those of his last name, Onfroy de Bréville. His father opposed his entry into the École des Beaux-Arts upon leaving Stanislas College, so he enlisted in the army but returned to Paris in 1882. From this interlude, he retains an immoderate taste for the military thing, patriotism, even chauvinism. He finally joined the École des beaux-arts and exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1886. There he received mixed reception. He then began a career as a cartoonist and contributed to La Caricature and La Nouvelle Lune with loaded portraits.

Job is known for his remarkable illustrations of children’s books, the texts of which are mostly by Georges Montorgueil. His large colour compositions helped to maintain the cult of the nation’s heroes. His drawings of Napoleon and Murat have populated the imagination of generations of children. His sense of detail is found in L'Épopée du costume militaire français. Even in children’s albums, he makes sure to reproduce the uniforms with extreme precision.

His most famous books are Murat, The Great Napoleon of the Little Children, Let’s Play History, Louis XI, Napoleon, Bonaparte and Les Gourmandises de Charlotte. He also illustrated the life of Washington and made himself known in the US. An artist full of verve and gaiety, he was a member of the humorists and exhibited to the Incohérents. His studio is reconstituted at the museum in Metz.
