"Portrait Of Jack Russel By Riab"
Adorable portrait of Jack Russell, made in oil on a beautiful mahogany panel, by Riab (1898-1975). Boris Stepanovich Riabouchinsky was born in Russia in a large landed family, and was sensitized very early to the beauty of nature, and especially of wildlife, during the hunts organized on the family lands. Enlisted in the army, officer, he remained loyal because of the White Russians after the assassination of the Imperial family, and did not leave his country until 1920, the fight becoming desperate. His family, robbed of all their possessions, left the country for Italy in 1918. He joined Constantinople, then began a long journey, which he used to develop his talent as an animal painter, across England, Canada, and the United States. He arrived in Paris in 1927, and settled permanently in this country until his death. Thanks to his mastery of French, an old tradition of the Russian aristocracy, he easily integrated hunting circles, and exhibited his work for them. He also produced many watercolors. We feel his sensitivity, his talent for perceiving the spark in the animal's gaze in this charming portrait of a dog. The oblong octagonal format is original, certainly made for a suitable frame. The painting is in excellent condition.
