Gustave Paul Alexandre Surand was born in Paris and studied at the Ecole des beaux-arts, a student of Jean Paul Laurens. He was an oil painter, pastelist and sculptor.
Already in 1881 he began to exhibit his works at the Salon des artistes francais, receiving an honorable mention three years later. He also exhibited at the 1889 and 1900 Expos where he won a silver medal. He was also a genre painter but his most appreciated works are those where he portrayed large wild animals at rest or at the moment of a predatory attack. He died in Paris in 1937 at the age of 77; In 1973, his Parisian atelier located in the Drouot palace was sold.
