"Christ Triumphant, Red Chalk Drawing, Bearing An Old Attribution To Jouvenet "
Interesting red chalk depicting Christ rising into the air, a banner in his hand, triumphing over his defeated enemies. The composition is powerful, surely taken from a study for a large altar painting. Jouvenet is an important artist of the grand siecle, and a representative of the great classicism that developed under the reign of Louis XIV, and participated in his great work of renewing the faith. The drawing was presented by a former collector under a gray pass, on which Jouvenet is written in ink. A Berain baguette, original format, not cut, but worn, forms a beautiful set.
