This sculpture is signed by the Marseille artist Philippe Garbeille, with an atypical career since after studying in Marseille then in Rome, he decided to settle in the United States, in New Orleans, in 1842.
He will find success across the Atlantic thanks to his busts: among the most important commissions, are Saint Francis and the Virgin and Child (1846) for the Saint-Louis Cathedral, as well as the portraits of Zachary Taylor (1847), President James Knox Polk (1848) and Andrew Jackson (1848).
He died in New Orleans in 1853.
