"Scandinavian Design: Desk Lamp By Svend Aage Holm Sørensen, 1958"
Elegant table lamp in blackened metal and mahogany diabolo, circa 1958, by Svend Aage Holm Sorensen (Denmark 1913 - 2004). With opal glass on which is affixed a Swedish production label. This model was made in gray and red. Lampshade missing. Dimensions: 42 cm H Works perfectly. Very good general condition. The Danish designer Svend Aage Holm Sørensen (1913-2004) is known for his lighting fixtures, which he produced himself in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Despite the success of his work on the vintage market, information on biographical information about this designer and his eponymous production company is scarce. Holm Sørensen is believed to have designed lighting fixtures for the major Danish lighting manufacturers Fog & Mørup and Lyfa in the 1950s, before founding his own lighting company, Holm Sørensen A/S, to produce and distribute his own designs. Holm Sørensen’s style evolved considerably, with his designs from the 1950s truly reflecting the style of mid-century modern lighting and clearly influenced by the De Stijl and Bauhaus movements. His dimmed floor and desk lamps feature the classic tripod base that was very popular at the time, and reference pieces such as H. Th. J. A. Busquet’s Pinocchio Lamp. From the 1960s onwards, Holm Sørensen’s style changed dramatically. His designs moved from colourful, geometric desk and floor lamps to pendants with unfinished brass and copper surfaces. These pendant lamps are Holm Sørensen's interpretation of the Brutalist style, popular from the 1950s to the mid-1970s. Originally introduced by Swedish architect Hans Asplund, the style was adopted by many iconic designers around the world, including Le Corbusier. Despite the lack of information about the designer himself, many of Svend AAge Holm Sørensen's works fuel a large market for his modernist and brutalist designs, which are highly sought after in Denmark and around the world.
