We can date this weapon from the 2nd half of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th for the metal part. The shaft is modern, it is only used for the presentation of the weapon.
The iron part : it is a single-piece forged iron. The blade is double-edged, leaf-shaped with a central edge. The crossguard consists of 2 flattened quillons curved towards the socket, which probably represent stylized fantastic animals. The socket is conical. Its back face shows traces of the folding of the metal at the forge. A hole at the base of the socket for the fixing nail.
On the face opposite this hole, perhaps traces of an old repair? Length of the metal part = 34 cm including 22 cm of cutting part and 12 cm of socket.
I chose to leave this weapon in its brown patina of discovery because the oxidation seems quite marked to me, although if desired the piece can be polished, but traces of oxidation will persist...
The shaft is modern, it starts with a small ring at the junction with the casing. It is not fixed in a constant manner to the metal part but just threaded, which facilitates shipping.
Although of rustic manufacture, this piece whose authenticity is indisputable is pleasant, at a moderate price.
Shipping costs = France 20€, Europe 30€
