"Japanese Niō "
Wooden statue representing the Niō: Naraen Kengō. One of the two temple guardians, usually stands to the left of the entrance. Due to its size, this statue must have been at the entrance to a dojo because the Niō are often associated with martial arts. It is on a wooden base 30 cm in diameter and 5 cm high. The feet are consolidated to the base with modern glue. The black lacquer is absent in many places due to friction, certainly intentional as a sign of protection. Dimensions given for the statue.
