Jane Stanhope (1755-1824)
Portrait of Jane Stanhope around the age of 15 during the reign of Louis XV. Lady Harrington became famous for her fashion sense and physical attractiveness; she and Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, were named "the best dressed ladies" at a party hosted by the Duchess in September 1782. In 1794, she became a lady-in-waiting to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III. Highly favoured by Queen Charlotte, Lady Harrington was a lady-in-waiting until the Queen's death in 1818.
French school of the 18th century. Inscribed on the back of the stretcher "École de Nattier" and "Jane Countess of Harrington".
