Lovely watercolor depicting a passage through the village of Courbons in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence - formerly the Basses-Alpes - which reminds us of a delightfully old-fashioned time. A rich palette of shades of ochre, beige, sepia with touches of gray - green to describe the picturesque old stones, as this bard of Provence loved to do so much ... Never removed from its pretty little frame "à la Berain" in carved and gilded wood. It still has its original glass and background paper. Signed "Etienne Martin", dated November 10 (18)79 at the bottom left and located at "Courbons" at the bottom right. Dimensions: 19.5 cm x 12.7 cm watercolor 21.8 cm x 14.7 cm with its frame Our artist, among the most famous painters of the Provençal School, listed in the Alauzen Dictionary of Provençal painters and sculptors, was endowed with many qualities, painter, art writer and musician, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1876 to 1904. He also appears in many museums in Toulon, Tourcoing, Rouen, Pau, Marseille and of course that of Digne - Les - Bains, of which he was the curator for several decades.
