"(Dictionary of Arts): verterelle designates one lock with long rod, provided with an opening called an auberonnière. In this opening can engage one projection called an auberon, placed on end of hasp or rod fixed perpendicular to the lock.
In Gothic period, for the closing of entrance doors as well as for that of furniture, these vertevelles or horizontal locks were frequently used. »
