17th Century Padlock, Forged, Its Beautiful Key, Good Condition, Vertevelle,

Superb provincial padlock, wrought iron riveted, half-moon, the upper pin, (the vertevelle) is a horizontal rod of 20cm x 14mm, on which slides the forged hasp. It was passed through 2 strong forged rings, one in doorframe, the other on door.

"(Dictionary of Arts): verterelle designates one lock with long rod, provided with an opening called an auberonnière. In this opening can engage one projection called an auberon, placed on end of hasp or rod fixed perpendicular to the lock.
In Gothic period, for the closing of entrance doors as well as for that of furniture, these vertevelles or horizontal locks were frequently used. »
