" Poet, Anniversary Day In Memory Of Omar Khayam - Persian Carpet Tabriz - Tapestry 1161"
Kingdom of Persia in 1074, he was invited by the Seljuk Sultan Mālikshāh Jalāl al-Dīn to Isfahan to undertake the reform of the solar calendar which would last 5 years and to organize astronomical observations. Director of the observatory, he built astronomical tables known as Zidj-e Malikshahi. He introduced a leap year in the manner of the Julian calendar and measured the length of the year as 365,242 198 581 56 days. On the death of Mālikshāh, he fell into disgrace. It is possible that some of his unorthodox poems were the cause. To cut short all suspicion, he then undertook a pilgrimage to Mecca. He was later found in Merv, then capital of the Seljuk empire. He then ended his days in Nishapur. Omar Khayyam is considered "one of the great mathematicians of the Middle Ages" but his algebraic works were not known in Europe until the 19th century. We owe him two important treatises in the history of mathematics: a classification, written in 1070 in Samarkand, of equations of degree three with their positive roots and in his second treatise, written in 1077 in Isfahan, he offers a reflection on the axiom of parallels. Khayyam is also a poet and philosopher, his poems are called "rubaiyat", which means "quatrains". Khayyam's quatrains, often cited in the West for their skepticism, would contain, according to Idries Shah, "mystical pearls", making Khayyam a Sufi. He would have advocated the intoxication of God, and said he was an infidel but a believer. Beyond the first hedonistic degree, the quatrains would therefore have according to this commentator a mystical dimension. He also presents, without order and without method, to use an expression of Montaigne in the preface of the Essays – therefore without strategy aiming to convince – his hopes, his doubts and his discouragements in what seems an effort of human truth. This is perhaps one of the reasons for the worldwide success of the quatrains. --------------------------------------- GALERIE LISSIER House founded in 1991 MEMBER OF THE SYNDICAT NATIONAL DE SNCAO Showroom in Paris 7th: Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Workshop for cleaning and restoring tapestries and carpets: by appointment only House founded in 1991 MEMBER OF THE SYNDICAT NATIONAL DE SNCAO Showroom in Paris 7th: Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Workshop for cleaning and restoring tapestries and carpets: by appointment only Galerie Lissier is a French family business specializing in the purchase, sale, appraisal, cleaning, restoration and conservation of tapestries, carpets, kilims and antique, modern and contemporary textiles.
