Object description :

"18th Century Japan, Perfume Burner Depicting A Shishi Or Komainu, Lion Dogs Guardians Of Temple"
A very fine antique porcelain stoneware piece depicting a Japanese shishi, a temple guardian lion-dog; the shishi is the Japanese adaptation of the mythical Chinese temple guardian lion.
* Edo period, Tokugawa period *
Half-dog, half-lion, the Komainu have been protecting Japanese temples for centuries, a tradition inherited from the Chinese Empire in the 5th century.
Here is a beautiful representation of a Shishi, the famous temple guardian, a superb perfume burner that will bring a spiritual and mystical touch to your home and whose protective role can only be beneficial.
The object is splendid, the ceramic is of the highest quality and has a beautiful glaze, the shaded lines of the decoration bring out the relief of the sculpture admirably, and the material, this coppery brown-red clay, unfired and with the patina of time, is truly beautiful.
The object is designed in such a way that when the incense is burnt inside, the fragrant smoke emanates from the nostrils and mouth corners of this mythical ancestral animal, half-dog, half-lion.
Personally, as you'll have gathered, I love this object !

I would still like to say that the object is not perfect, the ravages of time having left their mark in the form of small chips and a small accident to a leg (all this is precisely indicated in red on the last photo).
Despite these minor imperfections, I can tell you that this perfume burner is a little marvel of incomparable beauty and presence.
