Object description :

"Marcel Couchaux (1877-1939) Bohemian Caravans And Chickens, Normandy. Rouen School, Hodé, Cyr"
SUPERB oil on canvas by Marcel Couchaux representing caravans with characters and chickens in a Normandy landscape circa 1914, signed lower left. Size of the canvas alone without frame 50x61cm and 73x85cm including frame. This is therefore a magnificent post-impressionist composition by Marcel Couchaux with a fauve tendency, largely done with a knife in a very rich material as the painter used to treat his subjects at a certain period, here around 1914, he represents a bohemian camp animated by characters and chickens, because true to his reputation, Couchaux had made a specialty of painting gallinaceous birds. But he also dealt several times with the motif of travelers and their famous caravans, we find in his work a good number of paintings dealing with this motif, most painted around 1914, moreover some canvases on this subject have achieved very good results in sales regularly exceeding €3,500 (see Artprice.com) Marcel Couchaux born November 23, 1877 in Rouen - died April 9, 1939 in Rouen, is a painter of the Rouen School. Student of the Regional School of Fine Arts of Rouen. He did his military service from 1898 to 1901. During the First World War, he was mobilized as a nurse. He was domiciled in Sommery then in Rouen from 1923. He lived at no. 13 rue Marie-Duboccage in the 1930s then at no. 19 quai de la Bourse. He exhibits regularly at the exhibitions of the Society of Rouen Artists and at the Legrip Gallery in Rouen. He rests in the monumental cemetery of Rouen. He had Franck Innocent (1912-1983) as a student. The Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen holds several of his paintings. Finally, there are several books on Marcel Couchaux. This painting is in very good original condition, it would just deserve a cleaning, for the moment I am selling it as is because my restorer is on vacation. Delivered in a very pretty old 17th century style frame with mahogany patina, it has a few slight accidents but nothing very serious. Work guaranteed authentic
