Nicolas Poussin, born in June 1594 in the hamlet of Villers, in the commune of Les Andelys, and died on November 19, 1665 in Rome, is a French painter of the 17th century, a major representative of pictorial classicism of which our painting is a fine example. Trained in Paris, he practiced mainly in Rome from 1624. He painted both historical and religious scenes, mythological, but also landscapes with characters, echoing our painting. Although he fulfilled a few commissions intended for churches, he is best known for medium-sized paintings intended for a few Italian or French amateurs to whom he remained faithful throughout his life. His fame allowed him to become painter to the king and to return to France between 1640 and 1642, the approximate date of our landscape. He finally preferred to return to Rome where he lived until his death.
