Object description :

"Printed Nantes Canvas Favre Petitpierre - Historic Bedspread - Henri IV - Early 19th Century"
Canvas of Nantes, Henri IV, attributed to the Favre Petitpierre factory (around 1805 - 1820). Fine linen bedspread printed in red with copper plate. Piece lined with a rustic cotton canvas (or even hemp), in an ecru, noticeably gray color. The scenes and motifs are of high quality, particularly detailed. Each side drop has specific measurements (see details below). The head of this bedspread has been made to accommodate a bolster. Everything is entirely hand-stitched. This room has been carefully cleaned.

Condition : Note some slight differences in tone. In fact, certain areas which have lost their shine are noticeably more faded, without being excessively discolored. On the detailed photos, we can observe various reinforcement points having been summarily executed, as well as two small, barely perceptible holes, scattered in three or four places without particular gravity, and another of approximately 1 cm in diameter with lack of material (see photos). In addition to these imperfections, the whole is in a very good state of conservation, presenting no particular fragility or major defect.

We have other photos at your disposal, particularly concerning the reverse of the piece which is in very good condition. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information, we will be happy to provide it to you.

Canvases of Nantes:

1760: Nantes becomes one of the largest cities of the French Indication thanks to families like Langevin, Gorgerat, Petitpierre, Favre, Pelloutier, De Vries, Duber, Jean-Ulrich, André-Gottlieb Kuster (the list is not here not exhaustive) including some who are Protestant and originally from Switzerland. Close links between Nantes and Switzerland, notably the cities of Neuchâtel and Basel, as well as a significant demand for printed canvases intended for clothing and interior decoration, facilitate the establishment of these companies in Nantes. In the 18th century, the city was renowned for the quality of the designs of the paintings it created. At that time, great people were in fashion, as were literary, artistic and political news. Other subjects ranging from opera to plays to current novels are also the subject of a certain inspiration. Thus, due to its complex compositions, the quality of its drawings, the finesse of the engraving on wooden board, copper or cylinder, Nantes is a center of Indian production of prime importance in France.
Until around 1815-1810, the factories produced beautiful canvases, but they began an irreversible decline around the years 1820-1830 due to a new direction in fashions and tastes.
