The choice of copper as a painting surface gives the picture extraordinary luminosity and enables particularly fine details. This technique was quite common in the Baroque period, as copper offers a smooth surface that supports precise brushstrokes. Intense coloring and masterful lighting characterize this work, as is characteristic of Flemish Baroque painting.
At the center is the baby Jesus, protected by Mary and Joseph, while the shepherds embody humility and reverence. The detailed composition includes delicately folded robes and illuminated faces that enhance the spiritual poignancy of the scene.
Baellieur was known for his ability to depict complex scenes in a small space without losing depth and drama. This painting is an outstanding example of this artistry and exemplifies the spiritual devotion of 17th century Flemish painting.
