Henry-Arthur Bonnefoy was a student of Léon Cogniet. He was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1861.
He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1857, then continuously from 1873 to 1904, as well as at the Salon des artistes d'Arras from 1875 to 1904, and at the Salon d'Amiens.
He received a third-class medal at the Salon des Artistes français in 1880, another second-class medal at the Salon of 1884 and a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
