Object description :

"Antique Triebner Ens & Eckert , Volkstedt ,figurine Of Judith,19th Century."
Antique Volkstedt porcelain hand painted figurine of elegant woman holding staff and man’s head.
The figurine depicts the heroine of the famous biblical story of Judith and Holofernes. It is the apocryphal story (“The Book of Judith”) of a Jewish widow who murders an Assyrian general to save her town from invasion. When Holofernes sieges the city of Bethulia, Judith seduces the general and murders him in his sleep. The assassination gives the Israelites the advantage they need to defeat the Assyrians. Since that Judith is considered the symbol of liberty, virtue and victory of the weak over the strong in a just cause.
Figurine depicting Judith standing after slaying Holofernes .The hand painting details of the figurine is incredible. The woman’s head decorated with a wreath of flowers; in one hand she holds something like a sword, in the other a mask imitating the head of a man. The clothes are loose-fitting and pastel-colored with spread flowers on it. Each detail was fully sculpted then hand-painted with amazing realism.
The piece polychrome painted and ornamentally gilded, colors are bright and vibrant. You can get lost in this figurine while examining it inch by inch. It has the appropriate blue crossed hayforks mark for Triebner Ens & Eckert with impressed number 37
