Émile-Pierre de La Montagne was known for his genre scenes, flowers and murals. He studied at the Antwerp Academy, then specialized in monumental art at the Brussels Academy, then studied portraiture in Paris. During the First World War, he stayed in England and received numerous portrait commissions. As a decorator, he painted the murals of the Antwerp City Hall. He executed a portrait of King Albert I. Based on the correspondence of a friend of La Montagne, it is stated that in his English time, Winston Churchill had been apprenticed to him
