Maurice Petitdidier, born in Epinal, France, in 1918, studied drawing and painting before becoming a decorative artist in Pau after the Second World War. He emigrated to Quebec in 1951 where he became a renowned illustrator of magazines, books (see last photo) and "comics".
Returning to France in the early 60s, he resumed his activity as a decorative painter before devoting himself, in retirement, to painting and sculpture. This small painting, representing a city street at nightfall, is dark and superbly bright at the same time, testifying to the intimate life of a Parisian neighborhood at rest, behind the half-closed shutters...
