Object description :

"Portrait Of A Knight As Saint George, 17th Century Flemish Painter"
17th century Flemish painter
Portrait of a knight in the robes of Saint George

Oil on wooden panel
(stabilised with parquet on the reverse)

24 x 18 cm.
In a fine frame 44 x 38 cm.

A dashing knight in armour, immortalised in an authoritative and proud stance, is the subject of our fine portrait, of good quality and executed by an artist of the Flemish school of the 17th century.

What makes the painting, executed in oil on an oak panel, suggestive and interesting is the fact that our effigy is immortalised as the personification of Saint George, a noble knight of the Christian faith, made famous thanks to a legend that arose during the Crusades and for his victory over a fearsome Dragon.

This feat, rich in symbolic meanings in the struggle between Good and Evil, made him a favourite subject in art, especially from the Renaissance onwards, as it allowed for the staging of both chivalric and religious ideals and values.

Hence probably the choice of associating the portrait with this figure, thus allowing the knight to show himself with an attitude of physical prowess and moral firmness.

He is depicted dressed in shining armour and a crested helmet, while his iridescent red cloak appears puffed by the wind, enhancing the figure's dynamism. At his feet is the large beast, which seems already tamed by his spear, and also the castle with its high walls, which according to legend were built to protect the terrified inhabitants.

Very good condition, restoration and repainting.
