Pencil drawing representing the mythological theme of Aeneas*, Anchises and Ascanius after the fresco by Raphael (in the Vatican), signed Montaigne and dated 1820, from the early 19th century. This drawing is in good condition. Signed and dated lower right (hidden by the marie-louise). Later frame. This part of Raphael's fresco was copied by 19th century artists, both recognized (such as Bouchardon) and amateurs (like our artist). Please note: trace of a central pil, some yellowing, wear and tear, see photos. * Aeneas, Anchises and Ascanius is a figure from a fresco by Raphael, painted around 1514-1517, in "The Fire in the Town", a composition of the Chamber of the Fire in the Town, in Rome, Vatican. The drawing depicts a scene from Virgil's Aeneid, where the hero Aeneas leads his family after the burning of Troy. The group shows three generations of Aeneas' family. The young man is Aeneas, who carries an older man - his father, Anchises - on his shoulder. At his side follows his young son, Ascanius.
