"Ottoman Military Cavalry Blunderbuss, Circa 1789-1800"
This Ottoman blunderbuss is of rare quality. Unlike the many weapons, often of poor quality, that equipped irregular troops, this is a purely military model, intended for the cavalry. The quality of execution is irreproachable, the production is quite comparable to that of the English weapons of the time. It is also possible that despite the very clear Ottoman control marks, this is a weapon of Western manufacture, British or French, which would probably date from the modernization of the Ottoman army's armament under the reign of Selim III (1789-1807). Indeed, the Sultan had the very firm will to modernize his army by calling on Western advisers, and the most modern techniques. The young Napoleon Bonaparte had been approached in 1795 to take care of the modernization of the Ottoman artillery, but he was finally prevented from doing so by the events of the time in France.
So in summary, we are far from the usual poor quality of oriental blunderbusses, whose abundant silver decoration often hides the misery of manufacture.
