"Coromandel Lacquer Screen Furniture Maison Gouffé"
Beautiful Coromandel Lacquered Screen Doors Furniture from the Gouffé house. The Gouffé house was a large French furniture manufacturer located at the time in the Faubourg St Antoine in Paris with a quality of execution that is no longer in doubt. Coromandel is a form of Chinese art used to decorate furniture. The most commonly decorated pieces are screens, chests and side tables. The technique consists of applying layers of wet clay to the wood, cooking them to harden the clay, then applying several layers of lacquer. This piece of furniture is from the beginning of the 20th century, it has 2 front doors which give access to 3 sliding drawers with Chinese monograms and another drawer which is pulled out. It was used as a television cabinet (castors added to the feet which means that it has some missing parts in this area (see last 2 photos). It measures 146 cm in height, 93 cm in width and 50 cm in depth.
