Queen's armchair
Lacquered wood, pegged joints

Paris, circa 1780

Elegant armchair in relacquered beech. it stands on four tapered, fluted and grooved legs, with a ring at the top. moulded belt, belted front crosspiece. Finely moulded armrests. The vertical ‘baguette’ at the base of the armrest support is reminiscent of the chair carpenter Antoine Gailliard, who used this motif on a recurring basis.

Antoine Gailliard
Awarded a master's degree in 1781, he supplied the Garde-Meuble royal before the Revolution and later the Imperial Administration. He retained the use of his stamp after the abolition of guilds, and produced a few works of cabinetmaking. 

Condition report: seat restored. Spring-loaded seat from above, panel back. Upholstered in a cotton and silk blend fabric (resistant) by Lelièvre, entitled ‘Marivaux’. Lacquered with animal glue, as in the period.
