"Daisy Makeig-jones For Wedgwood, Fairyland Lustre Goldfish Bowl, C. 1915"
An absolutely delightful and delicate octagonal lustre bone china footed bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood. The exterior features a gradient of purple hues, ranging from light to dark, with hand-painted goldfish rendered in a unique style using brush strokes, and gilded filigree ornaments adorning the top edge both inside and out. The interior boasts a rich mother-of-pearl glaze, with the center decorated by a bold gilded Chinese Emperor dragon, an ancient symbol of fertility, life, light, strength, and wisdom. The inner surface of the bowl also features several hieroglyphics in gold. The piece is stamped on the base with the Wedgwood Portland vase mark and the pattern number 4831.
This beautiful Wedgwood bowl showcases a stunning goldfish design from the Fairyland Lustre collection. Crafted with the finest materials, this piece will elevate any home decor. Wedgwood's attention to detail and quality is evident in every aspect of this exquisite bowl.
In 1909, Daisy Makeig-Jones was hired by the Wedgwood firm in Staffordshire, England, to decorate pottery. She later developed the “Fairyland” Lustre pattern, which combined dazzling iridescent glazes with motifs from fairy tales, revitalizing the Wedgwood brand. Of all the company's ware, the most highly prized and keenly sought after are the Fairyland Lustre pieces. Daisy’s Fairyland Lustre line first appeared in late 1915 and reached its height of production in the 1920s.
Daisy Makeig-Jones was one of the great women designers of the early 20th century. Her Lustrewares gained a well-deserved status as fine art. Due to the variation and unpredictability of the glazes and decorative techniques, as well as Daisy’s penchant for experimentation, each Lustre piece is truly unique.
The pieces that exist today are rare works of art by a brilliant and innovative individual. Any collection of Daisy Makeig-Jones’s work should include her Fairyland Lustres, as they represent a significant moment in ceramic history. Limited editions and the ever-growing interest in her work have led to steadily increasing prices. Many collectors view the acquisition of Daisy Makeig-Jones designs as a sound investment.
